Subjects

Topic
Topic includes Science; Geography; History; Art; DT and RE. Each half term there is a Topic Focus which allows these subjects to link, promoting deeper learning and understanding of that subject.
The curriculum overview for Topic is planned on a two-year rotation so that children do not repeat areas.

Subject Curriculum Maps
Computing
Some classes will teach computing discretely, where as in other classes it will be built into Topic planning. Children use a range of software and hardware resources when taking part in their computing lessons and we encourage children to practice and master these skills when they are attempting to work across the curriculum and at home.
We use a wide range of devices to help create a digital record of our work, with an emphasis on creating and sharing digital content in a variety of media. Content creation is facilitated through the use of laptops, digital cameras, microphones, iPads, etc. These are saved in their own secure areas and shared with others in the school environment. We focus on how we can use these in our everyday lives, allowing children to understand the real-world applications of the computer skills we are embedding.
We are committed to developing responsible digital citizens with a better understanding of how technology can help us without taking over our lives. To help with this we constantly look at ways our equipment is used and how it impacts on us in and outside of school. Our online safety focus is across the school with pupils showing an understanding of acceptable use and how to look after our own information when online.

PE
Intent:
PE is viewed as a highly important lesson at Maple Ridge. It can give all learners the opportunity to develop physically, emotionally and socially – all imperative to the development of well-rounded learners. We strive to allow this by giving all children a broad and balanced curriculum, exploring a range of different sports and activities. The progression of skills and experiences through this curriculum support our children in developing at the best pace possible.
Aims:
-
Children to develop themselves physically – coordination, core strength, balance, control, agility, speed and physical fitness.
-
Children to develop themselves socially/emotionally – learning to be around others in a small space, take turns with a partner or group, accepting not always being first (when taking turns or winning/losing), developing resilience and perseverance when challenged.
-
Inspire children to lead healthy active lives.
-
Children to experience a range of learning environments e.g. hall, swimming pool or outside and continue to apply the Maple Ridge School rules (Be kind, Be safe, Be helpful).
-
Children to make and apply safe decisions across a range of contexts.
We order the focus of our lessons as follows, making best use of the weather for outdoor learning:

Wet weather – When there is wet weather during weeks when the children would usually be learning outside, teachers will make a choice about which indoor PE activities will best enable children to make progress with their learning priorities in P.E.
Residentials - Residentials have been added to the PE curriculum map as they entail a lot of outdoor adventurous activities (OAA). Year 5 and 6 children will both take part in residential trips with the duration and activities selected being dependent upon pupil needs to support participation.
Trips and Residentials
We believe that taking children off- site provides an excellent opportunity to learn through practical first-hand experience and to generalise their learning in real life situations.
There are a variety of trips that your child will have the opportunity to participate in linked to their learning. The older children in the school have the opportunity to spend up to four nights away at an approved residential site and participate in all sorts of exciting activities whilst there.
Residentials
Year 4 – one night sleepover at Maple Ridge School run by school staff. The children sleep in the classrooms and have breakfast before going home.
Team 3 – one to two nights at Runway's End in Farnborough.
The children get opportunities to explore a variety of different outdoor and adventurous activities run by staff at the centre. School staff support throughout the day and night.
